macquarie island station

Ocean, Biology, Climate, & Geology

The Macquarie Island Research Station was built in 1948 and is operated by the Australian Antarctic Division. It is located on a shallow isthmus of land on the northern tip of the island, and, since its inception, has served as both a center for biological and geological research and a climatic and oceanographic monitoring station.

The complex itself contains extensive laboratories, weather monitoring equipment, and communications, as well as dormitories and living facilities for the scientists staying there.  The station buildings are powered by a combination of diesel generators and renewable energy such as wind turbines.

The wind-down from the Covid 19 pandemic meant that when I visited Macquarie, the station was almost empty of people, and we were not allowed to enter the facilities.  This was a shame, as I would have been very interested to speak with the scientists stationed there and hear about the projects they were working on in such a remote corner of the ocean.
