elephant seals
The other beach residents at Sandy Bay were the elephant seals. The adults were quite large and could move across the beach surprisingly quickly for their size. The young males were often fighting, rearing up and ramming their chests while they tried to gouge one another’s faces and necks with their teeth. The females, for the most part, avoided the conflict, opting instead to pile on top of one another for a group nap, punctuated by truly terrible noises of growling and burping as they disrupted one another in an effort to get comfortable. Finally, the juveniles, known as weaners, were also quite curious, and would come right up to us where we stood, bumping into our legs with their noses, or looking up at us trying to figure out their strange visitors.
