GEIR

Leknes, VestvågøyA

I met Geir Riise in his print shop in Leknes, a business which he had owned for 30 years.  Geir had grown up in the islands, and spoke at length with me about how much things had changed over the past several decades.  His father was a fisherman, and he noted that in his youth, almost everyone was connected in some way with fishing.  Today, however, changes in fishing are altering island culture. As fishing has become more industrial, most young people get jobs on the larger fishing vessels, leaving no one around to work in the shops, restaurants, and hotels.  He said that in addition, those of the younger generation that aren’t off fishing take advantage of the welfare system, and are paid handsomely by the government to not work at all.
