PATRICK & IRENE
MOTU PISCINE, RAIVAVAE
Giant clams for lunch
On one of my last days in the Australs, I was taken in a small boat from Raivavae out to Motu Piscine, one of the tiny reef islets (known as motus) set off the main island, to spend the day with a couple named Patrick and Irene. They lived on the motu with their children, several other members of their family, and their pet dog and piglet in a tiny, rustic house set near the shore among the palms. They had a business of sorts opening their islet up to visitors for the day to enjoy the pristine waters of the lagoon and the view across the water to the mountainous ridgeline of Raivavae. While I explored the motu with my camera, Patrick caught an octopus and cleaned a bucketful of giant clams for lunch. When we all sat down to eat, the clams had been cooked into a sauce to be served over rice along with roasted fish and taro, followed by spiced banana pudding in coconut cream.
