the derry castle
a call to action
Rocky coastline of Enderby Island
The Derry Castle was a British barque that was wrecked on the Auckland Islands in 1887. A severe storm drove the ship onto the reef near Enderby Island, and 15 of the 23 crew and passengers were quickly drowned or swept out to sea. The eight survivors built makeshift shelters using salvaged materials from the wreck, and lived off of shellfish and native plants for three months until they were rescued by the government steamship Hinemoa. This specific incident was one of the main incentives prompting the New Zealand government to set up caches of survival supplies throughout the subantarctic islands and to schedule regular visits to restock these caches and collect shipwrecked sailors.
