Evening service bell

Hapatoni bee boxes

On Tahuata, Celine and I hiked up to the dirt road that links the few villages of the island, and walked into the closest one, a tiny village called Hapatoni.  As we emerged from the trees, a local priest began ringing the bell of a beautiful old volcanic stone church to let the village know it was time for evening service.  We spoke with him for a few minutes and I had a look inside the church, which was built over 200 years ago, spare on the inside, but very peaceful.  As we walked through town, we passed many bee boxes; with so many fruit trees, the bees are quite happy here and make delicious honey, which the locals collect and sell in the markets.

On the porch of one of the communal buildings, I came across another local curiosity:  all of the women of the village were intensely playing round after round of bingo.  Apparently, they do this every night, and women of all ages participate and get really into it.
