A final interesting fact about Macquarie Island is its unique geology.  I learned from the geologist on the expedition team that it is the only known place on earth where the earth’s mantle is exposed above sea level, making its composition completely unique, and offering a one-of-a-kind opportunity to study a building block of our planet that is normally hidden deep underground or under the ocean.
