synopsis
my time on jura
I was sent to Jura on assignment in March 2018, and again in April, by the spirit company Whyte & Mackay, with a remit to capture the culture of the island and its residents, and its landscape, as well as the Jura Distillery itself. Driving a rental car that I picked up at the tiny airport in Islay when I landed, I made my way via the Jura Ferry to the village of Craighouse and the Jura Hotel, where I was staying. I spent a week on the island, during which time I was given full access, with my camera, to the distillery and its staff and was notified of any events and points of interest that the locals felt shouldn’t be overlooked. My hosts organized a boat trip for me up the eastern coastline of the island to the turbulent waters of the Corryvreckan, and I was able to photograph the town, the Paps, and some of the marine wildlife from offshore. In addition, I was taken on an extremely thorough and, at the same time, eccentric tour of the island by Alec Dunnachie in his van. Alec works on the island as a driver for hire, and runs his own one-man tour company with his van. His knowledge of the island, its history, and its residents is astounding, and he introduced me to many details that I surely would have missed on my own. In the remaining time, I drove the length of the island, speaking to everyone that I could and collecting their portraits and stories, some of which I will share with you here.
