THE VILLAGE

CRAIGHOUSE

The village of Craighouse houses the bulk of the island’s small population, and features the Jura Distillery, the Jura community shop (the only store on the island), the Jura Hotel (the only hotel, restaurant, and pub on the island), a small school, and a beautiful old church.  The feel of the place is quite cozy, and the people were all very warm and friendly to me, even more so after a few pints at the pub in the evening.  The road through town hugs the water, and every building looks out east toward the Scottish mainland.  On the north side of the village, and up the hill a short walk, lies a stunning graveyard with stones dating back to the 1600s.
