modern, but set apart

NÓlsoy

The Isle of Nólsoy boasts only one small town of the same name, located only a 30-minute ferry ride across the water from the capital city of Tórshavn. Its buildings are more modern than those in other villages of its size, and residents enjoy a peaceful town with easy access to the relative bustle of the city. I visited Nólsoy on the night of its yearly cultural festival. It was far more festival than culture, and honestly seemed to be an excuse for everyone in Tórshavn to come across to Nólsoy and get outrageously drunk. However, residents did offer samples of traditional food, and live music, though much of the music I heard included covers of American pop and rock songs.
