anakena
a lonely patch of sand
Long exposure, Anakena beach
Anakena is where you can find the only significant patch of sandy beach on the Easter Island coast. Located on the northeastern side of the island, and at the terminus of the north coast trail, it is a beautiful, sheltered bay with soft white coral sand. Anakena is believed to be the landing place of the first Polynesian mariners to land on and colonize Rapa Nui. There are two ahu in the vicinity of the beach, each with moai that have been carefully restored in recent years. The beach itself, being the only real beach on the island, is a popular spot for both locals and visitors, and is perfect to enjoy a swim, snorkel, or sunbath. After my six-hour walk along the north coast, I certainly enjoyed a late afternoon swim and some time on the sand prior to hitchhiking back to Hanga Roa.
