hanga roa

a look around town

Hanga Roa is the only significant town on Easter Island, and is home to the majority of the island’s population.  It has a small harbor, schools, a soccer pitch, and markets where the locals can sell their fish and produce throughout the week.  Much of the town today caters to visitors, and you can find several restaurants, bars, and shops, as well as tour companies, diving outfits, and bicycle, moped, and car rentals.  Throughout the day, many vendors sell produce directly out of the back of their trucks, or on tables on the side of the street.

Hanga Roa boasts a really cool museum as well: the Rapa Nui Museum.  I found it a bit dated, but the exhibits went into great detail about the history and culture of the island, and it was well worth a visit.

After my days’ adventures with my camera, I really enjoyed taking time in the evenings to walk through the town.  It always felt safe and peaceful, and there was just enough activity to keep things interesting.  The streets were lined with mimosa, hibiscus, and fruit trees, and the air was always sweet and fragrant.
